Sometimes custom woodworking is about grand built-ins and architectural statements.
And sometimes… it’s about saving someone’s back.
This project began with a simple and very honest request from my client:
“Can we make my bedroom dresser a little taller? I’m tired of bending down every time I grab a T-shirt.”
Instead of replacing the dresser, we decided to give it a promotion — by adding one more level. One more floor. A penthouse suite for socks and sweaters.
The Plan: Elevate, Don’t Replace
The idea was to design and build an additional upper section that would integrate seamlessly with the existing dresser — as if it had always been part of the original piece.
To make it happen, we selected beautiful sugar pine (often called “sugar pine” or “Zucker pine”), known for its light tone and fine texture. The soft warmth of the wood allowed the new section to blend naturally while still feeling fresh and refined.
For the drawers, we used high-quality plywood for stability and durability, along with soft-close drawer slides to ensure smooth and quiet operation. Because if you’re upgrading your dresser, you might as well upgrade the experience too.
Precision Installation
After fabrication, the new upper module was securely attached to the existing dresser using specialized hardware from Festool. This allowed us to achieve precise alignment, structural stability, and a clean, professional finish.
The result? A perfectly integrated extension that looks intentional — not like an afterthought.
The Outcome: Comfort Meets Craftsmanship
The dresser is now taller, more ergonomic, and much more convenient to use. No more unnecessary bending. No more morning back complaints. Just a practical improvement wrapped in thoughtful craftsmanship.
This project is a great reminder that custom woodworking doesn’t always have to mean starting from scratch. Sometimes, it’s about reimagining what you already have — and making it work better for your life.
And yes, the dresser seems very happy with its new floor.
