This custom entryway bench was designed as a truly unique architectural solution for a hallway interior in San Francisco. The main challenge was to create a piece that would allow the door to open fully while still providing comfortable seating and practical storage.
A Shape Designed Around the Door
The bench was carefully shaped to follow the door’s swing radius. Its curved, semi-circular front edge makes it comfortable to sit on while putting on shoes or tying laces. The geometry was not only an aesthetic choice — it was a precise functional decision to maximize space in a compact corridor.
One portion of the bench is positioned so that it remains visible and accessible, while the other section discreetly sits behind the fully opened door, making excellent use of otherwise unused space.
Solid Marble and Oak in Perfect Contrast
Half of the bench consists of a single, solid slab of marble — incredibly heavy and visually striking. The marble features a deep dark red tone with expressive natural veining, giving the piece a bold and luxurious presence.
The second half is crafted from oak and functions as a shoe storage compartment. The oak was finished with a dark tinted oil, which enhances the wood grain and creates a rich, warm tone. The combination of dark red veined marble and deep-toned oak results in a beautiful, balanced contrast between stone and wood.
Hidden Storage with Soft-Close Functionality
The oak section includes internal storage for shoes, ideal for seasonal footwear. The lid opens upward and is equipped with soft-close hinges, ensuring smooth and quiet operation. It also features a push-to-open system, maintaining clean lines without visible handles.
This makes the piece both elegant and highly practical for daily use.
A Distinctive Yet Practical Design Element
The curved seating surface provides a comfortable spot to sit, while the concealed storage keeps the hallway organized and uncluttered. Despite its unusual and bold design, the bench integrates seamlessly into the corridor, becoming both a focal point and a highly functional everyday element.
This project is an example of how thoughtful design, engineering precision, and material contrast can transform a simple entryway bench into a statement piece that enhances both usability and interior character.
Each bench is fully custom and can be adapted in size, materials, and finish according to the client’s space and preferences.
