This custom credenza was designed and built for one of my long-time clients in San Francisco. Created specifically for a children’s room, the piece combines storage, seating, and refined design details into one cohesive architectural element.

Thoughtful Design with a Built-In Bench

The most distinctive feature of this credenza is its central section, which functions as a bench. A soft cushion is planned to be placed on top, transforming it into a comfortable seating area for reading or relaxing.

The backrest above the bench has a graceful semi-circular shape, adding softness and a playful architectural accent that fits beautifully into a child’s room. This curved wall panel creates a unique focal point and gives the entire composition a custom-built appearance.

On both sides of the bench are enclosed storage sections, offering practical space to organize books, toys, and other essentials while maintaining a clean and elegant look.

Material and Finish

The credenza was crafted from solid white oak. After finishing with premium furniture oil, the wood developed a warm golden-honey tone that highlights the natural grain and texture of the oak. The finish enhances both durability and the tactile quality of the surface.

The toe kick (plinth) is made from the same oak but treated with a darker pigmented oil. This subtle contrast adds visual depth and creates a refined, balanced composition.

The side panels extend all the way to the floor, reinforcing the minimalist, architectural character of the piece.

Hardware and Functionality

The doors are equipped with soft-close hinges and a push-to-open system, allowing them to open with a gentle press. This eliminates the need for visible handles and preserves the clean lines of the design — an especially elegant solution for modern interiors.

Marble Countertop Selection

The client, who has excellent taste and a strong sense of design, selected a marble countertop in a beautiful, sophisticated shade. The natural stone pairs exceptionally well with the white oak door fronts, creating a harmonious contrast between the warmth of wood and the cool elegance of marble.

Modular Construction and Custom Sizing

Like many of my larger pieces, this credenza was built in segments to simplify delivery and installation — particularly important for apartment access with elevators, narrow doorways, or tight corridors.

The piece can be manufactured in any dimensions according to the client’s needs and space requirements. Every project is fully custom and tailored individually.

Production Timeline

The typical production time for a custom credenza of this complexity is approximately 1.5 to 2 months, depending on materials and design details.

This project is a great example of how thoughtful design, high-quality materials, and craftsmanship can transform functional storage into a refined and lasting interior feature — especially in a child’s room, where comfort, practicality, and beauty matter equally.
